7 Herbs & Spices for A Healthy Winter

Staying warm and healthy is not only desirable but also a necessity when it comes to the winter season. The best and most effective way to do that is by including body warming ingredients into our daily diet, to help our metabolism produce more heat than it normally does. Along with a good workout and healthy meals, include the following herbs and spices will help you stay warm and cozy this winter.


Ginger

Known for being a natural antioxidant and antiseptic, ginger is very beneficial in improving blood circulation throughout the body. Ginger also helps with digestion and warms up the body from within. The best way to stay warm with is by making a tisane by slicing it thinly and boiling it for 10 minutes. You can have this with some honey and a few drops of lemon.

Black Pepper

Black pepper is a powerful antibacterial and antibiotic in nature, due to the presence of immunity-boosting Vitamin C. To deal with the cold weather effectively, all you need to do is add 1-2 pinches of finely ground black pepper powder to your tea while it is in the boiling stage. Apart from helping to relieve sinus issues, it also helps warm up the body. Having dishes flavoured with a good amount of pepper will heat you up just enough for the winters.


Rosemary

One of the popular aromatic herb used in cooking, rosemary is proven to help fight allergy symptoms and provide relief to those suffering from asthma. Rosmarinic acid present in the herb has both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, making it beneficial for allergies. It also gets rid of free radicals that suppresses the inflammatory responses of certain white blood cells, along with that of allergic antibodies. Rosemary can be used in dishes and as a garnish in salads.

Coriander

A very commonly used herb in Indian cooking, coriander is abundantly available in winter, luckily so. Being a rich source of Vitamin C, coriander is known to increase the body’s immunity and helps in fighting against seasonal ailments. Coriander is a versatile herb that can be added in almost every dish, including soups, salads and curries.

 

Tulsi / Holy Basil

Tulsi has been widely used for its medicinal properties, and is known for its ability to relieve symptoms of allergies, breathing problems and bronchitis. Being a potent anti-oxidant it also has anti-ageing properties. The best way to keep the body warm through tulsi is to chew a few leaves with 2-3 black peppercorns and 1/2 a teaspoon honey.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon is known to help dry dampness in the body and helps in warming people who always feel cold and those who suffer from poor circulation. Cinnamon has high antiseptic properties and excellent digestive properties as well. Cinnamon can be had to tea, coffee, or added as a spice to a number of dishes.

Fenugreek

Also abundantly available in the winter season, fenugreek or methi leaves are known to be warm and nourishing. Also effective against diabetes and bad cholesterol, fenugreek leaves are considered beneficial for weight loss. Owing to their slightly bitter taste, they go much better in parathas, theplas and subzees, rather than soups.
