TISANES IN AYURVEDA

Ayurveda, from India’s decorated Vedic, dates back to about 5000 years and talks in detail about one of the oldest forms of traditional medicine known to mankind. Ayurveda translates to “The Science of Life”, and emphasizes on methods that cohesively take one towards physical and psychological wellbeing by promoting the balance between mind, body, and spirit. One of these methods is Ayurveda’s signature dietary recommendations and that is where tisanes or herbal infusions come in.

The mind, body, and spirit can sometimes be pushed into an imbalance by the ever-changing elements of nature and the environment. According to Ayurveda, our physical and mental states are made of three doshas (energies), each with a unique combination of the five elements of the universe – Air, Water, Fire, Earth, and Space. The balance between the doshas – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha – is regarded as an essential component for a healthy life. Lifestyle, food, weather, stress, etc, can cause this balance to tip, and to restore it, herbal infusions are recommended, made with unique ingredients for each dosha.

Vata

The Vata dosha derives from the elements of Air and Space with colon, joints, bones, thighs, ears, brain, skin and nerve tissues being its main locations. Often called the king of doshas, Vata translates to “wind”. Characterized by a thin, lanky build, Vata individuals are quick thinkers, active, have dry skin, thin hair, and cold hands and feet. At their best, a Vata individual is creative, flexible, expressive and fast-moving. However, when their doshas are at an imbalance, they tend to be anxious, indecisive and tend to have issues like dry skin and constipation. The tisane prescribed in Ayurveda for a Vata imbalance promotes calmness and relaxation while treating restlessness, insomnia, and indigestion. The ingredients for this tea are:

  •   Stevia
  •   Ginger
  •   Cloves
  •   Fennel
  •   Licorice
  •   Cinnamon

Pita Dosha
Pitta

The elements that together form the Pitta dosha are Fire and Water. Its locations in the body are the stomach, small intestine, liver, pancreas, spleen, eyes, blood, and sweat. A Pitta individual has a medium build, fiery personality and body temperature leaning towards the warmer side. A balanced Pitta individual has a sharp intellect, a joyous disposition, is friendly, organized, driven and courageous. On the other hand, an imbalanced Pitta individual is angry, arrogant, overbearing, and judgmental. This imbalance causes rashes, ulcers, inflammations, infections, heartburn, fever, etc. The Pitta tisane that cures these abnormalities and promotes balanced emotions, calmness and clear thinking is made of the following ingredients:

  •   Rose
  •   Cardamom
  •   Licorice
  •   Ginger
  •   Stevia
  •   Fennel

kapha dosha
Kapha

The elements of Water and Earth together form the Kapha dosha. Chest, throat, head, lungs, lymph, fatty tissues and connective tissues are the main locations of Kapha in the body. A solid body frame, high endurance, and calmness of the mind distinguish a Kapha individual from the rest. In balance, a Kapha individual is affectionate, patient, forgiving, stable, forgiving and compassionate. But, while in an imbalance, they tend to become depressed, lethargic, needy, insensitive and possessive. The metabolism slows down and the individual becomes sluggish. To combat these issues, and to promote optimism, energetic behavior, and ideal weight, Ayurveda prescribes a special tisane for an imbalanced Kapha, which is made of the following ingredients:

  •   Black pepper
  •   Cloves
  •   Cardamom
  •   Cinnamon
  •   Licorice
  •   Ginger

It is essential for every individual to identify their dosha and work towards keeping it at a balance. The tisane recipes that Ayurveda has bestowed upon us for each individual dosha play a vital role in maintaining the balance between the mind, body, and spirit. The natural remedy to many physical and psychological ailments, it is highly recommended that these tisanes be included in one’s daily diet to promote overall health and well-being.
